When the weather heats up, so do our engines, and there’s no better place to stretch the legs of your Audi, Porsche, or Volkswagen than right here in Colorado. This is where altitude meets attitude, and we’ve rounded up five of the best roads to run this summer. Whether you're chasing twisties, views, or just a damn good excuse to get out of town, these are the drives to know.
1. Peak-to-Peak Highway (Highway 72 & 119)
A local favorite that never gets old. Flowing elevation, sweeping curves, and endless alpine scenery. This route takes you from Nederland to Estes Park with enough rhythm and grade change to keep even the most seasoned driver engaged.
2. Guanella Pass
Less trafficked than the usual suspects, this one’s tight, technical, and surprisingly scenic. It rewards precision, timing, and brakes you can trust. The kind of road where the connection between man, machine, and mountain feels especially real.
3. Independence Pass (Highway 82)
This one’s a thriller. Hairpin switchbacks, cliffside drop-offs, and the kind of narrow lanes that make wide fenders feel risky. Open only in the warmer months, it climbs to over 12,000 feet with no shortage of white-knuckle fun.
4. Squaw Pass Road (Highway 103)
A classic Denver jump-off. This one offers a balanced mix of mid-speed curves, forest cover, and changing terrain. Ideal for an early morning rip before the day heats up.
5. Million Dollar Highway (US 550)
Down south, this legendary stretch between Silverton and Ouray is a jaw-dropper. Guardrails? Sometimes. Views? Constant. Elevation changes and tight turns make it a proper test of both confidence and capability.
